Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro sits just 3 degrees south of the equator. Instead of four seasons, it has two dry seasons (January-March and June-October) and two rainy seasons (April-May and November). Your choice of month directly affects your summit success, comfort, and crowd levels.

Quick Answer

The best months to climb Kilimanjaro are January, February, July, August, September, and October — dry season months with clear skies and the highest summit success rates. Avoid April and May (heavy rain). For fewer crowds and good value, choose January-February or September-October.

Which Route for Which Season?

Dry Season (Jan-Mar, Jun-Oct)

All six routes are excellent. Choose based on preference — Lemosho for scenery, Machame for popularity, Northern Circuit for the ultimate experience.

Rainy Season (Apr-May, Nov)

The Rongai Route is strongly recommended — it approaches from the drier northern side and sees significantly less rainfall than southern routes.

Peak Season (Jul-Aug)

If you want to avoid crowds during peak season, choose Northern Circuit, Rongai, or Umbwe — all see far fewer climbers than Machame and Marangu.
