Expert Guide

How to Choose Your Kilimanjaro Stay

By Budget

  • $50-$150 — Comfortable guesthouses and mid-range hotels in Moshi and Arusha
  • $150-$400 — Premium lodges with mountain views, pools, and excellent service
  • $400+ — Ultra-luxury: plantation estates, boutique retreats, and private villas

Base Camp vs Mountain Huts

  • Base camp lodges — Stay the night before and after your climb in comfort. Rest, recover, and celebrate your summit
  • Mountain huts (Marangu) — The only route with hut accommodation. Wooden A-frame shelters at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo
  • All other routes — Your operator provides tents, sleeping mats, and dining tents at each campsite

Before or After

Pre-climb lodges in Moshi let you adjust to the altitude (890m) and meet your guide team. Post-climb luxury stays are perfect for recovery before heading to the Serengeti or Zanzibar. Many climbers book an extra rest day after summiting.

Common Questions

Kilimanjaro Accommodation FAQ

Where do you stay when climbing Kilimanjaro?
On the Marangu Route, climbers stay in wooden mountain huts at each camp. All other routes (Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Umbwe, Northern Circuit) use tents provided by your operator. Before and after the climb, most trekkers stay at lodges in Moshi or Arusha.
What are the best lodges near Kilimanjaro?
Popular pre- and post-climb lodges include Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort, Aishi Machame Hotel, and Weru Weru River Lodge in Moshi. For luxury options, Arusha Coffee Lodge and Legendary Lodge in Arusha are excellent choices with Kilimanjaro views.
Do I need to book accommodation separately for a Kilimanjaro climb?
Most climbing packages include pre- and post-climb hotel nights plus all mountain camping equipment. However, many climbers choose to upgrade their lodge or add extra rest days. We can arrange custom accommodation around your climb.
What are the mountain huts like on Marangu?
Marangu Route huts are wooden A-frame structures with bunk beds and basic mattresses. Mandara Hut sleeps 60, Horombo Hut sleeps 120, and Kibo Hut sleeps 60. They have communal dining halls and basic toilet facilities. Bring your own sleeping bag for warmth.
Can I combine a Kilimanjaro climb with a safari?
Yes, combining a Kilimanjaro climb with a Serengeti, Ngorongoro, or Tarangire safari is one of Tanzania's most popular itineraries. Most climbers add 3-5 days of safari before or after their trek, staying at lodges and tented camps in the national parks.
How many nights should I stay in Moshi before climbing?
We recommend at least one night in Moshi before your climb to rest after travel, check your gear, and meet your guide team. If you're flying in from a different time zone, consider two nights to adjust. Moshi sits at 890m, which helps with initial altitude acclimatisation.
Is there WiFi on Kilimanjaro?
There is no WiFi on the mountain itself, though some camps have intermittent mobile signal (especially lower camps). Most lodges in Moshi and Arusha offer reliable WiFi. Many climbers purchase a local SIM card for basic connectivity at lower elevations.
