Ngorongoro Farm House
from $160 / night
Ngorongoro Farm House is a warm and inviting lodge set within a 500-acre working coffee and wheat estate in the fertile highlands of Karatu, just a short drive from the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. For Kilimanjaro climbers who have conquered Africa's highest peak and want to extend their Tanzanian adventure with a world-class safari experience, this lodge offers the ideal transition from mountain to bush. The lodge's 52 rooms are housed in colonial-style cottages spread across beautifully landscaped gardens, each featuring terracotta-tiled floors, hand-carved wooden furniture, crisp white linens, and en-suite bathrooms with hot water. Superior cottages include private verandas with views across the coffee plantation to the distant Ngorongoro highlands. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious — more country house than luxury resort — with crackling fireplaces in the lounge and the aroma of fresh coffee ever-present. The farm-to-fork dining experience is a highlight. The estate grows its own Arabica coffee, and guests can join morning harvest walks before enjoying cups of single-origin brew at breakfast. The kitchen sources vegetables and herbs from the organic garden, eggs from the farm's chickens, and honey from on-site beehives. Dinner is served in the candlelit dining room or the open-air boma, where roasted meats and fresh salads are accompanied by stories of the day's crater adventures. The lodge is ideally positioned just 30 minutes from the Ngorongoro Crater rim gate, allowing early-morning descents to the crater floor for Big Five game drives. It also serves as a convenient stopover on the route between Kilimanjaro and the northern safari circuit, making it a natural addition to any climb-and-safari itinerary.

Wildlife
The nearby Ngorongoro Crater is one of the densest wildlife areas on Earth, supporting approximately 25,000 large animals including all of the Big Five. The crater floor hosts large lion prides, endangered black rhinoceros, hippo pools, flamingo-fringed soda lakes, and vast herds of wildebeest, zebra, and eland. The surrounding highlands are home to elephant, bushbuck, and over 200 bird species.
Dining
The lodge restaurant serves farm-to-fork cuisine sourced from the estate's organic gardens, apiaries, and free-range poultry. Breakfasts are accompanied by single-origin Arabica coffee roasted on-site. Picnic lunches are prepared for crater excursions. Dinners in the candlelit boma feature roasted meats, fresh salads, and homemade desserts. The bar serves Tanzanian craft beverages and South African wines.
Activities
Activities include Ngorongoro Crater floor game drives, coffee plantation tours with roasting demonstrations, organic garden walks, guided bird watching on the estate, cultural visits to Iraqw and Datoga communities, mountain biking through Karatu highlands, day trips to Lake Manyara National Park, and cooking classes with the lodge chef.
Best Time to Visit
The Ngorongoro Crater offers outstanding game viewing year-round. The dry season from June to October delivers the clearest skies and best wildlife concentrations on the crater floor. For climbers arriving from Kilimanjaro, this lodge makes an excellent 2-3 night addition before or after the trek during any season. The green season from November to May brings lush landscapes, migratory birds, and fewer tourists.
