About Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort

A premium lodge set on expansive grounds in Marangu on the eastern slopes of Kilimanjaro, offering panoramic mountain views and easy access to the historic Marangu Gate.

Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort commands a prime position on the lush eastern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in the historic village of Marangu, gateway to the oldest and most established climbing route on the mountain. The resort's manicured grounds span several acres of tropical gardens, coffee bushes, and indigenous trees, with the snow-capped summit of Kibo peak framing the horizon on clear mornings — a sight that has inspired generations of climbers to attempt Africa's roof. The 40 rooms and suites are housed in stone-and-timber cottages scattered across the gardens, each designed to blend with the highland landscape. Interiors feature polished hardwood floors, locally crafted furniture, plush bedding, and en-suite bathrooms with rain showers. Superior rooms and suites offer private verandas with direct mountain views, fireplaces for the cool highland evenings, and spacious sitting areas perfect for reviewing route maps and acclimatisation plans. The resort's restaurant is a destination in itself, drawing on Chagga culinary traditions and the bounty of the Kilimanjaro highlands. Freshly roasted Arabica coffee from neighbouring estates accompanies every breakfast, while dinner menus feature grilled trout from local streams, slow-cooked goat stew, and seasonal vegetables from the resort's kitchen garden. A well-stocked bar offers Kilimanjaro Lager and Tanzanian wines for post-climb celebrations. Marangu Gate, the starting point of the Marangu Route — affectionately known as the 'Coca-Cola Route' — is a 20-minute drive from the resort. The concierge team coordinates every aspect of the climbing experience, from equipment hire and porter logistics to acclimatisation day hikes on the lower mountain. The resort also serves as an excellent base for exploring the Marangu waterfalls, Chagga caves, and the Kilimanjaro coffee trail.

Dining Experience

The resort restaurant showcases Kilimanjaro highland cuisine with international flair. Breakfasts feature freshly roasted local Arabica coffee, tropical fruits, and cooked dishes to fuel climbers. Dinners highlight the region's produce — grilled trout, banana stew, and farm-fresh salads. The bar stocks Kilimanjaro Lager, local spirits, and South African wines. Post-climb celebration dinners with mountain-themed menus are a specialty.

Activities & Experiences

Activities include Kilimanjaro climbs via the Marangu and Rongai routes, day hikes to Mandara Hut, Marangu waterfall excursions, Chagga cave explorations, coffee plantation tours with tasting sessions, visits to the Kilimanjaro National Park headquarters, village cycling tours, and cultural experiences with local Chagga communities.

Wildlife

The Marangu side of Kilimanjaro features dense montane forest that is home to blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and the elusive Abbott's duiker. Birdlife is prolific with Hartlaub's turaco, bar-tailed trogon, and mountain buzzard among the highlights. Higher up the mountain, alpine chameleons and four-striped grass mice adapt to the harsh moorland conditions.

Best Time to Visit

The Marangu Route is best attempted during the dry seasons of January to mid-March and June to October, when trails are less slippery and summit views are clearest. The resort itself is a year-round destination, with the highland climate providing pleasantly cool temperatures between 15-25°C. The green season from March to May brings lush landscapes and dramatic cloud formations around the peak.
