About Kaliwa Lodge

A stylish boutique lodge on the outskirts of Moshi with contemporary African design, a turquoise pool, and unobstructed views of Kilimanjaro — the ultimate pre- and post-climb retreat.

Kaliwa Lodge is a design-forward boutique property perched on a quiet hillside on the outskirts of Moshi, offering some of the most commanding unobstructed views of Mount Kilimanjaro from any accommodation in the region. The lodge was conceived as a sanctuary for discerning travellers seeking more than a functional bed before or after their Kilimanjaro climb — it delivers a genuine hospitality experience where contemporary African aesthetics, thoughtful service, and the drama of the mountain converge. The twelve rooms are individually designed with a sophisticated palette of natural stone, reclaimed timber, and locally woven textiles. Floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces ensure the mountain is an ever-present companion. Bathrooms feature rainfall showers, artisan soaps, and copper fixtures. The lodge's signature turquoise infinity pool, set against the Kilimanjaro backdrop, has become one of the most photographed spots in Moshi — the perfect reward after days of alpine exertion. Dining at Kaliwa is an elevated experience. The open-air restaurant, shaded by a sweeping thatched roof, serves a daily-changing menu that draws on Tanzanian, Indian Ocean, and Mediterranean influences. Ingredients are sourced from local farmers and the lodge's own herb garden. Evenings unfold around the fire pit with craft cocktails and the silhouette of Kilimanjaro fading into a star-filled sky. The lodge team includes experienced climb coordinators who partner with trusted local operators to arrange treks on all Kilimanjaro routes. Whether guests are preparing for the Lemosho, Machame, or Northern Circuit routes, Kaliwa provides detailed pre-climb briefings, gear storage, and a celebratory return with champagne and massage treatments for weary summiteers.

Dining Experience

The open-air restaurant serves a daily-changing menu blending Tanzanian flavours with Mediterranean and Indian Ocean influences. Breakfasts include fresh tropical fruits, Kilimanjaro coffee, and cooked-to-order eggs. Dinners are multi-course affairs featuring locally sourced meats, fresh fish, and produce from the lodge garden. Craft cocktails and South African wines are available at the bar. Post-climb celebration dinners are a house specialty.

Activities & Experiences

Activities include Kilimanjaro climb coordination on all routes (Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Marangu, Northern Circuit), pre-climb briefings and gear reviews, post-climb spa treatments, Moshi town walking tours, coffee farm visits, Materuni Waterfall hikes, Chemka Hot Springs excursions, day trips to Arusha National Park, and Maasai market visits.

Wildlife

While Moshi itself is an urban area, the surrounding Kilimanjaro foothills support diverse birdlife including sunbirds, weavers, and raptors. The nearby Kilimanjaro forest belt is home to colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of chameleon species. Day trips to Arusha National Park — just 90 minutes away — offer encounters with giraffe, buffalo, flamingos, and colobus monkeys in the shadow of Mount Meru.

Best Time to Visit

Kaliwa Lodge is an excellent year-round base for Kilimanjaro climbs, with the driest and most popular trekking months being January to mid-March and June to October. The lodge's elevated position outside Moshi means cool, comfortable evenings year-round. Clear mountain views are most reliable from June to February; cloud cover increases during the long rains of March to May.
